4 Benefits of Basketball for Kids
Engaging in team sports from a young age is known to have many benefits for children, specifically concerning their physical and psychological development. At No. 1 Draft Pick Training Academy, thousands of young people train with us every year, from our U8's teams to our U17's, and obtain invaluable life skills. We run school holiday, rookie, elite and rising star programs where we aim to have a 1:12 coach-to-player ratio wherever possible.
Research has shown that children who play competitive sports are more likely to succeed by building confidence, improving fitness, developing leadership and gaining focus. These skills can also extend to other areas of life, such as education, social connections and leadership development.
Basketball training encourages teamwork
Basketball is beneficial to children, especially in their early development; this sport not only helps improve fitness levels and build social connections but also assists in encouraging teamwork in a fast-paced and competitive environment.
From the moment a young player steps onto the court, they become responsible for adhering to specific rules and guidelines for play. In doing this, children learn the importance of discipline, active listening and teamwork. No player wants to let their teammates down, and they will begin to understand this very quickly if they decide not to follow the game's rules or don't work as part of the team.
Basketball teaches skills to advance children’s abilities
Although being taller can be an advantage when playing basketball—especially if deciding to continue playing during the later teen stages of life—it isn't an essential requirement. Having skills such as agility, being able to think quickly and having good hand-eye coordination skills are some of the necessary skills that will be refined to help advance and better a child's knowledge and abilities in basketball.
Perhaps the most important skill learnt from basketball is discipline. This skill is also transferable to other aspects of day-to-day life. Be it during simple playtime, in the classroom, or even among friends, discipline impacts how a child commits to a particular task, encouraging them to focus and remain 'on'.
Minimal equipment required and everyone can join in
Another benefit of basketball is that it requires minimal equipment, apart from the ball of course. Unless your child is playing in a competitive team, they generally will just need comfortable sportswear and sneakers, making it an inclusive and accessible sport for all, regardless of skills or background.
Furthemore, basketball focuses on improving skill and ensuring a good workout. This means that while your child is training, they are building muscle, strength, endurance, balance, coordination, and self-discipline while burning calories and getting fit.
Positive and motivational influences
At No. 1 Draft Pick Academy, we are passionate about ensuring our coaches not only share our vision but are also positive role models to all the young individuals who attend our Academy. They understand that there is so much more to basketball than learning basic ball skills.

They strive to be positive and motivational influences in all aspects of their coaching, helping encourage and uplift all children throughout their training.
